Man video calls family as doctors operate on his brain to remove tumour at north Indian hospital
This is the incredible moment doctors performed brain tumour surgery while the patient was busy interacting with his family through live video chat.
The incident took place at Apollomedics Super Speciality Hospital in Uttar Pradesh's capital city Lucknow on July 25.
The patient, Sachin, 20, suffered from a rare tumour in the left side of his brain, measuring five centimetres, which is found in only two out of a million people. He had been experiencing weakness for the last two years. The tumour, which affected his right limbs, could also lead to paralysis.
Dr. Ravi Shankar, Neurosurgeon, Appollomedics Hospital, said that the tumour was lying on the left motor cortex of his brain that controlled his right part of his body.
He added that the operation was called 'Awake Craniotomy and Excision of Tumour'.
A craniotomy is the surgical removal of part of the bone from the skull to expose the brain.
During the surgery, specialised tools are used to remove the section of bone called the bone flap. The bone flap is temporarily removed, then replaced after the brain surgery has been done.
Dr. Shankar said that the patient doesn't need to be unconscious in this surgery.
He added that if they had performed the operation after anaesthetising the patient, there were chances that he would become paralysed.
"After giving this information to the patient, he expressed his desire to undergo surgery in front of his family due to panic," he added.
However, Sachin's family could not be accommodated in the operation theatre and hence the hospital authorities granted him permission to do video chatting with his family.
During the four-hour surgery, Sachin was in a video chat with his family and didn't even realise when his surgery was completed.
Dr. Shankar said that the patient came out of the surgery without any problems and added that he was recovering well.
Sachin and his parents were in short of words to describe their gratitude for Appollomedics Hospital and Dr. Shankar.
"Dr. Shankar is truly God, a life-saver," stated Sachin.
This is the first-of-its-kind instance of brain surgery reported from Uttar Pradesh state.
Sachin was discharged from the hospital after four days of surgery.
Dr. Sushil Ghattani, chairman of the Appollomedics Super Specialty Hospital, credited Dr. Shankar and his whole team of doctors and nurses for the successful completion of the surgery.
