Wildlife rescuers captured a crocodile in a flooded street in northern India on Thursday after it snapped at a dog.

Footage shows the large reptile stalking the unsuspecting pooch in a street in Vadodara city in Gujarat state before launching itself at the animal.

Wildlife officials later captured the crocodile and released it back into its natural habitat away from people.

More than 250 people have died in monsoon floods across India in the past few weeks, with Assam and Bihar states in the north the worst hit.

This visual captures rescue officials rescuing a crocodile from a flooded street after it sneaked near a stray dog and tried to attack the quadruped in western India.

The incident took place on Aug. 1 at Rajstambh Society near Lalbaug locality in Gujarat state's Vadodara city.

Video shows officials and volunteers capturing the nearly three-and-a-half-feet long crocodile with rods and fishing nets. They later move the reptile into a house by climbing a metal gate. Some people are seen attending to the crocodile.

It was later released into the waters.

Earlier, the crocodile was seen attacking a stray dog standing on the inundated streets.

Visual shows two stray dogs turning up at the spot trying to escape the floods and find some dry place.

The two dogs are seen standing in the water while the crocodile silently approaches them just beneath the surface.

The reptile swam through the flooded streets and the residential colony, scaring the people.

The residents, waiting for floodwaters to recede from their homes, saw the reptile entering the society.

Video also shows a family sheltering behind a metal gate.

They do not open it to let the dogs in because they do not want to let the dangerous predator in at the same time.

When the crocodile is immediately next to one of the dogs, it takes it by surprise and makes a lunge for it.

Its enormous jaws make a snapping sound as they connect with its right back leg and the dog yelps and jumps away.

The dog moves to a safer distance but the other dog does not move.

Fortunately, the crocodile does not try to attack it.

Wildlife rescuers later captured the crocodile.

Rescue officials also captured and later released two more crocodiles from Kalali and Nizampura areas on August 1.

These reptiles had ventured out of the Vishwamitri River, that has been overflowing due to heavy rains since August 1 morning.

According to reports, the water-levels of the river has reached way above the danger mark. Many neighbouring residential colonies have been completely marooned.

Vadodara city's eastern and western parts got completely cut off after the authorities closed down all the bridges over the river.

More than 5,000 people have been moved to safer areas in the city with the help of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
