Beating the drought – a Bushbuck eats fallen dead leaves to survive

The Southern Bushbuck (Tragelaphus sylvaticus) is a sheep-sized antelope that occurs widely through the savanna of sub-Saharan Africa. Bushbucks tend to be solitary, and favour riverine woodland and bush associated with water. During the severe drought of 2016 in Kruger Park, many kinds of trees and shrubs shed their leaves to conserve water, depriving browsers like Bushbucks of green leaves to eat. This young male Bushbuck adapted to the lack of fresh food by eating fallen leaves and fruit off the ground on the edge of the Sabie River in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
