DREAM transformed the "Worst Block In Harlem" into an educational Summer Camp for kids
When students head back to school this fall, many teachers will find a notable decline in their students reading and math skills – an issue often referred to as “summer brain drain.” Children from low-income families, in particular, lose nearly three months of grade-level reading comprehension and word recognition during the summer months.
To combat this issue in Harlem, DREAM – which started as a youth baseball league nearly three decades ago – is helping children from low-income families maintain or improve their reading skills during the summer. With a combination program that is part baseball camp, part reading workshop, 99.7% of campers avoided summer learning loss last year.
