Rhinos struggle to find green grass in the drought

Buy video

Kruger National Park was gripped by drought in late 2016, and many animals died of thirst and starvation. There was virtually no green grass anywhere, except on road verges, whose soils had more moisture from the runoff from small amounts of dew and light rain that fell on the tar road. Many grazing animals, such as Square-lipped (or White) Rhinos (Ceratotherium simum) , only eat grass. We found these hungry White Rhinos grazing on the short fuzz of green Couch Grass on the verge of a road. They were obviously hungry, but very calm as they tried to crop the short, green shoots of grass.
