Indian woman's in-laws try to cut her NOSE off in shocking divorce attack
A woman in northern India accused her in-laws of physically assaulting her, and attempting to cut her nose off for refusing to withdraw a complaint over receiving an oral divorce.
The shocking incident took place in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh state on August 5, coming a little over a week after the Indian parliament passed a bill to criminalised oral divorce among Muslims, or "triple talaq" in India.
The mother of the woman said her daughter was assaulted by the latter's in-laws, who attempted to chop off her nose after refusing to withdraw the legal complaint against the husband.
Footage shows the woman writhing in pain as doctors at a local clinic treated her facial injuries, while the next day (August 6) she appeared with her family.
Sitapur's SP LR Kumar was quoted in media as saying a case has been registered against the perpetrators.
The victim's brother also claimed to have been assaulted, saying his sister's in-laws attacked him with a stone.
The Indian Parliament passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage), Bill, 2019, also known as the 'triple talaq' bill on July 30 to protect women from being unjustly divorced under the custom.
