Hundreds of jellyfish have been washing up dead on a beach in Indonesia.

Video filmed on Friday (August 9) shows jellyfish every few feet along Erong beach in West Sumatra.

Ulung Jantama Wisha, a researcher with the ministry of marine affairs and fisheries, said the cause was unknown. He said: "It could be from the influence of the environment; it could be from [their] efforts to find food; it could also be due to the strong currents that [they became] stranded; it could also be due to the influence of climate."

"We will conduct research here so we can determine the cause of this incident," he added.

Jellyfish dry up quickly when washed up on a beach.

The phenomenon is likely to have a negative impact on local fishermen and the tourist trade.

Researchers in the field of Oceanography from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries will examine the cause of the large number of jellyfish stranded on Erong Beach, Kenagarian Sungai Pinang, Tarusan District, Pesisir Selatan Regency.

Ulung Jantama Wisha and three colleagues came to the location to ascertain what happened at that location so that many jellyfish died.

"We are here to find out why this jellyfish can go up for quite a long time," he said during an interview on Friday, August 9, 2019.

Menuritnya, these events usually occur about one month in a period and it does not last so long.

"Usually it is only seasonal, while at this time it can be and the jellyfish are constantly stranded," he continued.

According to him, many indications resulted in the incident ranging from weather to suspected poisoning experienced by the jellyfish.

"There are many indications, it could be from the influence of the environment, it could be from his efforts to find food, it could also be due to the strong currents that were stranded, it could also be due to the influence of climate," he continued.

In addition, according to him the thing that influenced the event was due to the variability of the Ocean climate. "It could be due to extreme weather, and when viewed geographically, it is dealing with the Indian Ocean," he continued.

According to him, it can also be influenced by the climatic conditions of the Ocean which ultimately affect the environment around where the jellyfish are stranded.

"Everything is still possible, we will conduct research here so we can determine the cause of this incident," he concluded.
