At least 10 people were killed and several feared trapped after a landslide swept away a southern Indian village.

The landslide hit Puttumala village, near Meppadi town, in the Wayanad district of Kerala state. It hit at around 17:00 local time.

There is an ongoing rescue operation by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police officials and local people.

Reports said a hillside collapsed, covering several acres of land, including two residential buildings for a local tea estate. A local temple and a mosque were said to have escaped the deluge.

The landslide took place on Aug. 8 at around 5 pm at Puttumala village near Meppadi town of Kerala state's Wayanad district.

The frightening visual shows vehicles, trees and houses being submerged in murky waters after a massive landslide in southern India.

Video footage of the incident shows half-buried vehicles and remains of buildings.

Several videos and images show the relentless rescue operation led by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police officials and locals to rescue the people trapped under the rubble.

Images also show bodies covered in murk being pulled out by rescue personnel.

Reports stated that an entire hillslope came crashing down over several acres of land, which housed two residential quarters of the tea estate, apart from a temple and a mosque.

Many people are feared trapped under the rubble.

According to reports, ten bodies have been recovered from the debris.

More than 1,000 people have been moved to safe areas.

Meanwhile, incessant rains have claimed three lives in the district on Aug. 8 and inundated several areas.

Wayanad received around 204 millimetres of rain in the past 48 hours.

The district administration has sought the help of the Army to help in rescue and relief operations.

More than 90 relief camps have been opened for 8,860 people.

Incessant rains have created a flood-like situation all across Kerala, killing more than 40 people.

Nearly 22,000 people have been evacuated to 315 relief camps.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has sought the army's help and additional 13 more units of the NDRF for rescue and relief operations.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in the state till August 14.

Red alerts have been issued in Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kozhikode districts.
