A Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill excavating a nest hole in Jackalberry Tree
The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill (Tockus leucomelas) is widespread and near-endemic in southern Africa, favouring Acacia and broad-leaved savannas. They are monogamous and territorial, and nest in hollows in living or dead trees, usually about 4 metres above the ground. This adult bird, probably the male, was excavating a narrow hole in the trunk of a in Jackalberry Tree (Diospyros mespiliformis) on the bank of the Sabie River in the southern part of Kruger National Park.
