Brave elderly couple fight off machete-wielding robbers in India
This is the moment an elderly man and his wife fight off two armed robbers, who tried to strangle him.
Shanmugavel, 75, was sitting outside his farmhouse in Kadayam village in southern India on August 11.
CCTV footage shows a masked man coming from behind and trying to strangle Shanmugavel with a towel.
As Shanmugavel resisted and tried to free himself from the man, his wife Senthamarai, 68, came out, hearing the commotion.
A second masked man also arrived but the couple put up a fierce fight. Though the men were wielding machetes, the couple threw chairs and other objects at them and forced them to retreat.
As the robbers fled, Shanmugavel even managed to rip a portion of the mask worn by one of them.
The couple sustained only minor injuries.
Kadayam police officials lauded the bravery of the couple and said they had identified one of the robbers with the help of the CCTV footage. “Both the men will be arrested soon,” said an official.
