A large rhino rolls around in a muddy watering hole in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Filmed in October 2016, the rhino wallows in the mud to try and keep itself cool.

Rhinos, Elephants, Warthogs and Buffaloes all love to wallow in mud. All of these animals have sparse sweat glands, and often lie in mud wallows to cool themselves on hot days. We saw this male Square-lipped (or White) Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) walking along the edge of a drying dam in Kruger National Park during the 2016 drought. Perched on his face and back were several Red-billed Oxpeckers (Buphagus erythrorynchus), birds that glean ticks and other parasites from large African mammals. His back was also covered with biting, blood-sucking flies called clegs. After pausing to sniff some old dung, the Rhino entered the shallow water on the edge of the dam and began mixing the grey mud with his feet, face and horns. He then rolled in the mud several times, coating both sides of his body and displacing the Oxpeckers and clegs. When he was done he got up and ambled off with the fresh, wet mud glistening on his hide and stuck between his horns.
