The birthplace of the United Democratic Front at the Rocklands Civic Centre in Mitchells Plain, South Africa was declared a heritage site, with speakers gathered to celebrate the occasion.

Among the speakers that took to the stand on August 20 was Cameron Dugmore leader of the ANC in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.

Joining him was Allan Boesak, one of the previous leaders of the Union Democratic Front, a broad coalition of unions, churches, civic organisations and unions who formed a wide opposition to the apartheid regime.

The Rocklands Civic Centre, in Mitchells Plain, was declared a provincial heritage site. The Civic Centre, was the site on the launch of the United Democratic Front (UDF) on 20 August 1983.

Among the speakers at formal declaration of the place as a provincial heritage site was Cameron Dugmore (leader of the ANC in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, and Allan Boesak, one of the leaders of the UDF in the 1980’s

The UDF was a broad coalition of unions, churches, civic organisations and unions who formed a wide opposition to the apartheid regime.
