This is the terrifying moment a huge mushroom-shaped cloud was seen looming over a lake in Hungary.

The natural phenomenon, believed to be a 'wet microburst', was captured on Lake Balaton is Alsoors, a village in Veszprem county, on August 16,

Part of the cloud is mixed with a strong localised downpour, leading to a beautiful rainbow on the surface of the water as the afternoon sun breaks through.

Microbursts - which can be catastrophic for passing planes - are caused by powerful downdrafts from a storm or rain shower. They last from a few seconds to several minutes.

A wet microburst - as seen in the video - is accompanied by a high density of rain on the surface of the water which gives the misty appearance and rainbow.

Lake Balaton in the Transdanubia region of Hungary is the biggest freshwater lake in Central Europe.
