This is the adorable moment a baby elephant in Kruger National Park plunged his face into the wet mud to cool down.

The clip, filmed on August 26, shows the calf having the time of his life playing and covering himself with mud.

“To our amusement, the little elephant crouched down on its forelegs and shoved his face into the mud. With his bum in the air, the baby elephant then used his back legs to plough forward, dragging his whole face through the mud!” The filmer Edrich, told Newsflare.

It was a hot afternoon during our safari in the Kruger National Park. We decided to drive past and check a few watering holes, as wildlife tend to gather around the water during hot afternoons. It was not long before we came across a herd of elephants playing and cooling down in a mud wallow next to one of these watering holes. Elephants love drinking and playing in water in general. Playing and wallowing in the mud is another spare time activity they love to bits. Covering themselves in mud, elephants cool themselves down while getting rid of itchy insects and parasites on their skins. For many, such as baby elephants, mud signals playtime. Our attention moved to a baby elephant still remaining at the mud wallow while the rest of the herd was leaving. It was a little male and he was clearly not done with his playtime in the mud. At first the baby elephant was kicking the mud backwards with his front left leg, looking like he was getting winded up and ready for something. To our amusement, the little elephant crouched down on its forelegs and shoved his face into the mud. With his bum in the air, the baby elephant then used his back legs to plough forward, dragging his whole face through the mud. The baby elephant even lifted a chunk of earth with all the ploughing which ended up sticking to the front of his trunk. It was hilarious to see how much this little elephant enjoyed pushing his face through the mud while looking very awkward at the same time. Then suddenly the fun was over and the baby elephant realized it was time to go. The playful baby elephant got up like lightning and ran back to join the rest of the herd. This very entertaining sight turned out to be the greatest highlight for our day out on safari.
