Islamic new Year celebration honors heroes

on the ocassion of the Islamic New Year on the 01st of september, The community of South Africa's oldest muslim town Bo Kaap staged their annual Muharram March. Young and old dressed in white walked the cobbled streets on a route designed to pass the oldest homes and mosques in the area.

One of the stops included the Tana Baru Cemetery, the burial place of a number of political exiles who were banished to the cape during the 17th century.

This year the organisers adopted the them for honoring apartheid era martyr Imam Abdullah Haron who was killed in detention by apartheid security forces 50 years ago.

September also sees south Africans celebrate their diverse heritage with heritage day being celebrated on the 24th of september.
