At least five dead as major fire breaks out at oil plant in western India; several feared trapped
A major fire broke out at an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited plant in western India's Mumbai city, killing at least five people.
The incident took place at around 08:00 am on Sept. 3 in Navi Mumbai's Uran area following which firefighting operations were initiated.
Among those dead, three are from the fire wing of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) which provides security cover to the plant.
According to reports, eight others have been injured in the fire, while several people are feared to be trapped.
The injured have been rushed to a hospital.
Video of the incident shows huge fireballs erupting from the oil plant. Huge plumes of smoke can also be seen rising out of the plant.
Video also shows the injured being moved to hospital in ambulances.
Confirming the incident, ONGC said, "A fire broke out in stormwater drainage early morning in Uran oil and gas processing plant. ONGC fire services and crisis management team immediately pressed into action. Fire is being contained. No impact on oil processing. Gas diverted to Hazira Plant. The situation is being assessed."
The firefighting operations are being carried out by the fire services and crisis management team of the ONGC.
The fire reportedly broke out in a cold storage unit of the plant.
The exact reason for the blaze is yet to be ascertained.03
