This is the gruesome moment medics cut a gold ring from a woman's finger after it had been stuck there for 30 years, and recently caused her finger to swell.

The pensioner's son noticed her ring finger was badly swollen badly and rushed her to the hospital in Mueng district of Loey, northeastern Thailand.

Footage taken on the afternoon of August 31 shows when staff in the emergency room used metal cutters to clip off the ring.

The woman's finger had swollen to three times its normal size and had become infected.

Rescue team volunteer Somchart Chumchuen said the woman had not removed the ring for more than 30 years because it was too tight.

He said: "Her finger was swollen and had started to rot so we worried that it might hurt so we have to be careful while cutting it.

''She said that it has been on her finger for more than 30 years because it was too tight to take off.

''Before this problem, she said she was happy to keep it there because it did not hurt and there was no way she could lose it.''

The woman's son said he drove her more than 60 miles to the hospital after the pain in her finger became unbearable.

He said: "I saw that ring on my mother's finger since I was young but it just started to tighten a few days ago when her finger swelled.

"Fortunately, I noticed the problem and made her see a doctor. I think my mother would have tried to ignore it unless I had noticed.''
