A water cannon was used to disperse protesters in South Africa who converged on Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The protesters showed their concerns over the growing amount of gender violence in the country with several demonstrators holding signs reading "stop killing us".

Hundreds of protesters converged on the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), to demand to be addressed by President Cyril Ramaphosa who was in in attendance at the World Economic Forum Africa 2019 summit.

Violent scenes played out in the precinct surrounding the CTICC as police struggled to hold the protesters back. Protesters blockaded the highway alongside the Connvention Centre during peak afternoon traffic and were eventually repelled with stun grenades and water canons.Several arrests were also made.

Protesters blockaded the entrance to the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) as the World Economic Forum Africa 2019 summit was starting its first day.

Most of the protesters marched from South Africa's parliament, where they had earlier protested for the government to urgently address the large scale gender based violence and femicide in South Africa.
