Black-footed Rock Wallabies (Petrogale lateralis) are a rare endangered species of small, rock-dwelling kangaroo found in Western Australia, and are vulnerable to extinction. The species is widespread, and has different races that are genetically distinct, and differ from each other in appearance. The main threats to it survival are predation by introduced foxes, wild dogs and cats, competition with introduced herbivores (e.g. rabbits and goats), habitat loss, small population sizes and global warming. The spectacular sandstone gorges in Kalbarri National Park provide suitable habitat for the Black-flanked Rock Wallaby, one of the races of the Black-footed Rock Wallaby. In 2017, 24 Black-flanked Rock Wallabies were translocated to the Park to rebuild the population and to increase its genetic diversity. This seems to be working – we found a family trio of a male, a female wearing a radio tracking collar and a large joey, or immature rock wallaby live amongst broken rocks near the river at the foot of the cliff at Hawk’s Head Lookout. The trio appeared in the late afternoon, with the radio-collared female sitting on a rock ledge on the left, the wary joey peeping out in the middle, and the male standing on a rock on the right. The female seemed to be meditating while sitting on her tail on the rock ledge. The male groomed himself, while the joey darted in and out of the rock cracks. Another male (with large patches of missing fur on his back) approached the female, and seemed interested in mating with her while the joey appeared briefly nearby. The female wasn’t interested, and disappeared into a crevice. She reappeared after a while, and sat calmly on the rock above the Murchison River below.
