This is the heartwarming moment a stranded dog was rescued after being abandoned then sheltering in the rafters of a flooded barn.

The hapless dog was left alone when hundreds of villagers fled following Storm Podul causing widespread flooding across northern Thailand over the last week.

Rescuers in a motorboat found the shivering pooch in the roof the shed which was almost entirely covered by the rising water in Ubon Ratchathani, northeastern Thailand, yesterday (05/09).

Rescuers from the Geekong Foundation heard the animal's whining while searching for flood victims and found the mutt trying to stay afloat on a haystack.

The first volunteer jumped in the water to approach the frightened dog which was seen shivering from cold and refused to be touched.

More volunteers followed their colleague inside the wooden structure before slowly approaching and calling the animal to get inside the boat but he was still afraid to move anywhere.

The team had to carry him onto the boat since the water began rising up to nearly 13ft. The dog was then evacuated to the safe location.

One of the rescuer team said: ''We first heard him crying but couldn't find him anywhere until we got closer to the haymow. We were glad that we found him and could save him in time.

''We will not leave anybody or any living creature behind. It's our job to save them as long as we can.''
