Two cave divers found a large sheet of plastic floating around in a deep cave system near the Bahamas.

Filmed on August 16, Cristina Zenato and Kewin Lorenzen are seen exploring a narrow cave system at the bottom of a blue hole near Grand Bahama Island as they encounter the plastic sheet.

Lorenzen told Newsflare: "Cristina and I are working on cataloguing blue holes and caves on the island of Grand Bahama for the purpose of research and conservation.

"While working on Cemetery Hole on the first exploration dive we noticed litter through the tunnels, reaching further than we actually physically had with our bodies.

"The reason why plastic can travel so far into the hole has to do with the tidal fluctuations for the Bahamas blue holes, which syphon (suck water in) or spring (push water out) on rotation every six hours during the day for a total of four times per day.

"What is 'insane', as we labelled this video, is the fact that that kind of plastic was dumped miles and miles away from this remote location and the journey it had to follow to end up in the cave is unimaginable for many."

Cristina and I are working on cataloguing blue holes and caves on the island of Grand Bahama for the purpose of research and conservation. Although the garbage and pollution issue is something known and something Cristina had been working on for many more years, before I became involved, it is still good to bring this to light as people really need to understand this further. Working for the nonprofit People of the Water, we are hoping to expand the reach of understanding of our relationship with the oceans and our presence by furthering exploration, education and conservation. We are also hoping, as it has happened already before through Cristina's work, to include more and more areas into marine protected areas. Although these areas might be remote, they are vital links into full eco-systems, including but not limited to the ocean, the mangroves, and the land based caves, which contain fresh drinking water. The ramification of one find and this work are very extended and bring to light how everything is absolutely connected. To date there are two full systems that are under revision for final approval for MPA. The third, which Cristina and I completed back in June has been submitted at the end of July.
The video was shot while actively working on the exploration and finding plastic trapped on the line we just laid a week earlier. While the ocean debris floats by the entrance, it is occasionally sucked in and ends up in the recess of the cave. What is "insane", as we labelled this video, is the fact that that kind of plastic was dumped miles and miles away from this remote location and the journey it had to follow to end up in the cave is unimaginable for many. It shows that we are not really aware of how far our footprint can reach with each single action, such as wearing a one time use rain poncho while on the bridge of a cruise ship.
