The ancient ceremony the Clypping (Clipping) of St. Mary's Church, Wirksworth, Derbyshire, UK
The origins are uncertain.
This ceremony takes place on 8th September each year.
The name Clypping / Clipping comes from an old word meaning “to embrace” and spellings vary.
The congregation surround the church facing inwards, holding hands and sing. The clergy lead a procession clockwise around the church & when they pass the congregation surrounding the church they let go of each others hands, turn round to face onwards, then hold hands again.
There is also a ceremony inside the church for the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The church is a Grade I listed building dating mostly from the 13th century, with some parts from the Anglo-Saxon period. It is thought that a pagan stone circle lyes under the church as Wirksworth is a very ancient place.
It's also though to be be lost Roman town of Lutudarum.
