This is the harrowing moment an exhausted dog was seen clinging to railings to avoid being washed away by a flood in northeast Thailand caused by Storm Podul.

The hapless pooch was caught in the torrent swamping homes in the town of Roi Et on August 31.

Resident Kanyapat Pangkon noticed the dog named Dong crying for help while clinging to the fence in front of her house.

Footage shows how the shivering dog was summoning all of its strength to hold on tightly to the gate to stop himself from floating away in the water, which was around 150 centimetre deep and flowing quickly.

She said: ''My family were escaping the rising flood when the dog was coming from nowhere and stopped in front of our house.

''He looked exhausted and was shivering from cold too, so we decided to bring him inside with us and dry him.''

The family waited about four hours for the flood to subside and finally returned to the pooch to his owner who was living a few streets away from their home.

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated after heavy rain caused severe floods across several provinces in northern Thailand over the last two weeks.
