Fisherman killed after boat capsized by wake from passing cargo ship on Thai river
Twenty-two fisherman had to be rescued and one was killed after their boat capsized in the wake from a passing cargo ship on a river in central Thailand.
The fishing vessel with 23 crew on board was travelling on Chao Phraya River in Samut Prakan, on September 9 when it was overtaken by a larger container ship which was allegedly speeding.
The bigger vessel caused a wake which rocked the small trawler, causing it to capsize in the middle of the river around 7:00 pm.
Footage shows how the crew had to stand on the upturned boat while waiting to be rescued.
One of the crew, Singh Kuekit, 50, was sleeping below deck at the time of the incident and was trapped inside and drowned. His body was recovered the next day (September 10).
Three of the injured crew who were rescued were taken to the hospital later in the evening.
Boat skipper Veera Chaorai said: ''We left the dock around 3.30 pm. About one hour later, a large cargo ship behind us gave a signal to overtake our boat.
''And I let the ship do so but it didn't slow down. It was speeding around 10 knots and created two big waves, which were too strong for our boat to handle.''
Amnart Sonmuak, director of Samut Prakan Marine Office, said the investigation is proceeding as they believed that the cargo ship might be responsible for the incident.
He said: ''None of the crew members remembered the name or any details of the cargo ship, so the investigation might take a longer time.
''But we are still looking for the owner and the captain and will take them for questioning to prove if the boat skipper's statement is true or not.''
