This is a traditional cake of the people of northern Vietnam and is often made during festivals. The cake is called "Bánh Giầy" in Vietnamese or Vietnamese Sticky Rice Cake in English.
The cake is round because it represents the sun.
The cake is made from glutinous rice. The rice will be crushed with a wooden hammer until it becomes soft to firm and sticky.
The men will hammer hard down so sticky rice can stick together. The hammer has to be steady so the rice can be flexible. This job requires strength and time, the men have to take turns to beat the hammer to avoid broken glutinous rice.
After the glutinous rice is sticky, the women will use the knife to shape the cakes. The cake is shaped round to symbolize the sun.
The cake is often served with salt, beans or pork.
