This is the dramatic moment a village was destroyed and washed away after monsoon rains hit the Philippines.

Hundreds of homes were swamped after Tropical Depression Marilyn reached Zamboanga City in the south of the country.

Footage taken last Thursday (12/09) shows the moment several wooden homes succumbed to the power of the deluge and gave way, crumpling at its foundations.

A torrent of water overflowing from a nearby river swamped the small village of Tumaga destroying the wooden homes with tin roofs.

Resident Joe Fernandez said: ''The houses could not survive and they just disappeared. We'll need to rebuild everything again.''

City Social Welfare Officer Maria Socorro Rojas more than 4,000 people from different villages were evacuated to shelters in the city.

Relief workers are delivering food, clothes, portable toilets and medicine to those affected.
