This is the heartwarming moment firefighters cut free a sea turtle that had become tangled up in fishing nets on a beach in southern Malaysia.

School teacher Arifah Hussain, 30, spotted the creature in distress while jogging on the Mersing beach in Joho state on January 19.

The weak loggerhead sea turtle was trapped in a mass of thick green ropes barely able to move its flippers and unable to free itself.

Arifah tried to help the turtle but could not reach him through the net. The panicked jogger then frantically called the emergency services for help.

Officers came with knives and scissors then spent four minutes cutting the nets to free turtle. They then carried the creature back into the ocean.

Arifah said: "This is why I want to clean up the beach and the sea from the trash because it is not only dirty but it is also dangerous to the marine life.

''I am pleased that the turtle is safe now. I was worried about him for a while because he looked so weak and it scared me.''

The loggerhead sea turtle is listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
