Around 1,500 volunteers from Padang CIty in West Sumatra, Indonesia took part on Saturday in "World Cleanup Day."

Footage showed groups collecting rubbish which had been scattered along the Batang Arau River.

According to the World Cleanup Day website, the event sees "volunteers and partners worldwide... come together to rid our planet of trash – cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets."

1500 people from various communities in Padang City, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia, took part in the World Cleaningup Day event, 21 September 2019.
This action took place in three locations, namely the Batang Arau River or the Muara Port area of ​​Kota Tua Padang, Padang Beach and Pasir Jambak Beach. Among the participants there were also communities with disabilities.
The participants in the action cleaned up the rubbish that had been scattered along the river, using makeshift tools and boats. The rubbish piled up in several places, such as on the side of a ship that is anchored, and even has deposited with river streams.
Generally, garbage found in household plastic waste from various brands and types. Even plastic waste found more than 25 years old.
According to participants, Batang Arau River is an important river in West Sumatra and is a tourist attraction. The river that empties into the port of Muara Padang, was once an important port hundreds of years ago, when Indonesia was still controlled by the Dutch.
The 2019 World Cleanup Day action is also expected by participants, so that the public is aware of not littering, including going to the river because it will reach the sea. Besides causing flooding, littering is one of the causes of environmental damage. The local government was also asked to more optimally handle the problem of waste.
