An elephant who was rescued two months after she went missing along with her carer, finally took her first steps into freedom as she arrived at the Elephant Rehabilitation Center in northern India.

The elephant, previously known as Laxmi, was moved to the facility in Delhi's Yamuna Nagar.

The rehabilitation centre is run by ngo Wildlife SOS in collaboration with the Haryana Forest Department.

The 40-year-old elephant has now been given a new name, Jasmine.

After a dramatic rescue operation that lasted almost 14 hours, Jasmine- Delhi’s last elephant, was escorted by a convoy of vehicles from Delhi Police, Delhi Forest Department and Wildlife SOS.

According to reports, Jasmine has already made herself comfortable in her forever home, located in the jungles of Ban Santour, near the Kalesar National Park.

Upon arrival, the elephant was given fresh fodder and water to drink, followed by a thorough shower to help her recuperated from the long journey. A team of veterinarian doctors conducted a preliminary medical assessment to determine her health condition.

Once the mandated quarantine period is over, Jasmine will join a herd of four elephants housed at the Elephant Rehabilitation Center.

Speaking about the elephant's health, Dr. Yaduraj Khadpekar, Asst. Director, Veterinary & Research of Wildlife SOS said, “Her feet are in really bad shape with severely overgrown foot-pads and cracked toenails. Small broken stones were also found embedded in the foot pads which must have been causing her a lot of pain. This is a common condition in begging elephants.”
