A woman became an unlikely celebrity after she delivered a boy with a one-and-a-half-inch tail in northern India's Uttar Pradesh.

However, both the mother and her newborn had to leave the hospital in Greater Noida as a large number of people flocked to see the boy's unusual appearance.

Visuals showed doctors showing the tail as the mother watch on from the side.

Reports said the woman, identified as Alka (26), gave birth to the boy on Sept. 23.

She was admitted to the health centre by her husband, Kaushalendra Kumar, earlier in the day.

Kumar, an autorickshaw driver by profession, is a resident of Mainpuri.

When asked, doctors at the primary health centre in Kasna termed the appendage as a sacrococcygeal teratoma- a tumour that grows while inside the womb.

Kumar said the baby and the mother had to be moved from the hospital as people started turning the boy around to check the tail.

Meanwhile, doctors have referred the baby to another hospital where he will undergo an examination on Sept. 26.

Doctors have also debunked theories which stated the tail as a second reproductive organ as rumours.
