A Buddhist temple collapsed and fell into a river after several weeks of heavy rain.

The religious structure's concrete base is believed to have succumbed to the pressure from a stronger current in Lopburi, central Thailand

Pensioner Thammasat Ketwang, 70, was feeding the fish when he heard a cracking noise from the temple on Tuesday (September 24) afternoon.

He then turned around and saw the building collapsed into a pool of water.

Local monks were shocked by the damaged and blamed the local building for not taking more care when constructing their temple.

One of the monks said: "There was a lot of rain in the past week which caused the pool below the building to be full of water.

'''I think the foundations must have been eroded and they could no longer withstand the pressure from the water.''

Nobody was hurt after the incident because the building was empty at the time. The abbot will now contact the construction engineers to diagnose the problem and begin the repairs.
