A female adult elephant sustained critical injuries after it was hit by a speeding train in eastern India.

The incident took place on September 27 near the Banarhat area of West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.

Visuals showed the horrifically injured elephant trying to stand on its feet while writhing in pain.

Another footage showed the elephant standing up but falls down on its side as soon as it starts to move.

The elephant was later seen standing erect while people filmed it from a distance.

The impact of the collision also damaged the train's front.

According to reports, the driver failed to stop the train as the elephant suddenly tried to cross over.

Meanwhile, passengers of the 75741 train which runs from Siliguri in West Bengal to Assam's Dhubri, were left stranded.

A team of veterinary doctors and forest officials were pressed into action to tend to the injured elephant.

The pachyderm is likely to be moved to an animal clinic where it will undergo treatment.
