An elephant in eastern India was hit by a train in the morning of September 27, leaving it critically injured.

The train is believed to have been the 75741 SGUJ-DBB (Siliguri-Dhubri) Intercity Express, operating between Banarhat and Nagrakata when it struck the elephant.

The wounded animal crawled away and fled through the forest.

The line suffers frequent accidents such as this one, striking elephants on the tracks, prompting authorities to attempt cautionary measures such as reducing speed limits.

Friday morning. It was an otherwise normal day, and the 75741 SGUJ-DBB (Siliguri-Dhubri) Intercity Express between Banarhat and Nagrakata was on its usual route, through the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. The engine of the train hit an elephant that was trying to cross the tracks in the jungle. The hit left the animal severely injured, and a video of the accident has made it to social media.

The Banarhat-Nagrakata route is notorious for elephant deaths ever since the line was converted to broad gauge. It runs right through the heart of Dooars, across several elephant corridors, and on its way, has killed or left injured many wild animals since its first run.

On September 27's accident took place at 8.30 am. A video of the critically injured elephant trying to drag itself out of the way of the train has left people devastated. The video shows the wounded animal struggling to get away from the railway tracks, as people watch in helplessness. The engine on the other side of the frame also shows the impact of the hit.
The Banarhat-Nagrakata rail route passes through a major elephant corridor and trains plying on the tracks. The frequent accidents have had forest officials and railways try and come up with solutions. Railways had limited the speed of the trains to 25 kmph inside the forest areas in 2015-2016. While 2015-2016 saw the number of elephant deaths and injuries in the area coming down, it was then raised to 50 kmph during the day. However, even with frequent checks and restrictions on speed limits and buzzers, trains on the Dooars route have continued to kill elephants.

CV Raman, Alipurduar divisional railway manager of the Northern Frontier Railways, said in July 2018 after an accident, "We have imposed a 24-hour speed restriction along a 15km stretch between Chalsa and Banarhat stations in the Dooars. For 10 kms, trains will run at a speed of 30 kmph from 5pm to 5am, while along the remaining 5-km stretch, the trains will run at a speed of 30 kmph for 24 hours."
