Silat Minangkabau or abbreviated as "Silek Minang" in principle as one of the typical culture of Minang which is passed down from generation to generation by the Minangkabau ancestors before. Minangkabau people have a tendency to migrate since hundreds of years ago. To wander off of course they must have enough stock in protecting themselves from the worst things during the trip or overseas, for example being attacked or robbed by people. Besides being a provision to migrate, silek is important for the nagari's defense against external threats.
So the silat function can be divided into two namely as
• self-defense (self-defense from enemy attacks), and
• Parik Paga in Nagari (domestic defense system).
For these two reasons, the Minangkabau people in the past need to have a good defense system to defend themselves and their country from enemy threats at any time.
Silek is not only a tool for martial arts, but also inspires or becomes the basis of various dance and randai movements (Minangkabau drama).
One of the silat that exist in the area of ​​Kabau is Silum Sunur / Silur Pagu Sunur. This silat was pioneered / developed by Anduang Ijuak, which is located in Nagari Sunur, Nan Sabaris Subdistrict, Padang Pariaman District. anduang ijuak, the beginning of teaching students located in the jorong tingkalak precisely banda taewan, this is where the Silek Pagu Sunur College was established. while he himself resides in korong koto girls who are still sun-worshipers. With this sunur silek, the sunur nagari character "anduang ijuak" fought the invaders and defended the nagari.
