A train station was attacked during a night of violent protests in Hong Kong.

Rioters sprayed graffiti and attacked machines inside the Sheung Shui MTR subway station, which managers have since shut down amidst escalating unrest.

Filipino migrant worker Lore Abling said she was out to do some shopping when she passed by the area on Monday morning. There were violent protests throughout the previous evening.

Lore said: ''The station was badly damaged and we weren't able to use trains like normal.''

Twenty MTR stations were attacked by demonstrators. The MTR Corporation today (Tue) closed half of its 94 train stations to prevent damage to its facilities and reduce risk to its passengers and the staff.

Chinese government officials responded by claiming "a large group" of masked rioters had "extensively" destroyed properties, including at MTR stations and blocked roads in the city.

The 2019 Hong Kong protests, also known as the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement, are an ongoing series of demonstrations in Hong Kong which began with the aim to oppose the introduction of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill proposed by the Hong Kong government.
