Regent (or Smoker) Parrots (Polytelis anthopeplus) are social birds that occur in two disjunct populations on the west and east of the Nullarbor Plain. Males are yellower than females, and have more red on their wings. The western race, Polytelis a. anthopeplus, is fairly common, and is mostly found in open eucalypt woodland and adjacent cleared farmland, where they feed on cultivated grains as well as the seeds on native grasses, fruits and eucalypt and acacia blossoms. They fly swiftly, diving through tree canopies, and are wary while feeding or drinking on the ground. One of the best places to see these beautiful birds is the birdbath at the Stirling Range Retreat on the edge of Stirling Range National Park in southern Western Australia. This small flock of Regent Parrots arrived in the early morning to drink at the birdbath.
