Thousands of spectators gathered in the rain as four cooling towers at an iconic power station were today (Sun) demolished.

A controlled explosion brought down the disused towers - each standing at 375ft high - in just 45 seconds when it was detonated shortly after 10.30am this morning.

Approximately 140 homes were evacuated and a 300-metre exclusion zone was set up around the site of the Ferrybridge Power Station, near Knottingley, West Yorks.

There were cheers and gasps as the four towers - which have stood for over 50 years - fell to the ground.
