Thai woman adopts injured toad and nurse it back to health
A kind-hearted woman found a toad with a broken leg - which she took to the vets and has now adopted to nurse back to health.
Pornpimon Taweesap saw the injured creature in her front yard when she was about to go to work in Bangkok, Thailand, on Wednesday (October 15).
At first, she thought the amphibian was dead as it was lying on its back and not moving. But she noticed that the toad was still breathing and struggling to turn itself around.
Pornpimon used a stick to help the toad but when it failed to hop away, she picked it up and left it in a flower pot before going to work.
However, she was worried about the toad and called a relative to check on it, who discovered the toad still had not moved. Pornpimon rushed home and took the toad to the nearby vets, Animal Space, where she paid the equivalent of around 200GBP in vets bills.
Veterinarian Khun Looktarn said x-rays revealed that the toad had fractured his leg.
She said: "Despite having no wounds on the outside, the X-ray results show that the toad was injured. His back right leg bones is not fully broken but, fractured which is the reason he is immobile."
The vets injected anaesthetics into the toad's leg for pain relief and to reduce the swelling before prescribing medication to assist the recovery.
Pornpimon is now keeping the toad, which she has nicknamed Pancake, in her home and will care for him until he is released.
She said: "I am the one who stopped to help the toad in the first place, so it would be wrong to help a little bit then give up. If it was worth helping then, it's still worth helping now with his broken leg.
''I will keep caring for him until he can hop again, then I'll release him back into the natural world where he belongs.
"I have to go to work everyday so my sister will give him the medication while I am away.''
