In the remote mountains of northern Thailand is a small region where five hill tribes live together. They include the Karen Long Neck tribe and four others - the Akha, the Lu Mien or Yao, the Lahu and the Kayaw. Each of the indigenous group of peope have settled in the area where they are given special status by the Thai government. Whereas most would once have survived by farming, they now earn a living by selling handicrafts to tourists who visit the area. The Union of Hill Tribe Villages can be found in Chiang Rai. This video, set to royalty free music, shows the tribal women going about their days. Perhaps the most well-known of the tribes are the Karen Long Neck women, also known as the Kayan or Padaung people, the women wear brass rings around their neck. They only remove the rings for a few hours once a year for a new coil to be added during a women-only ceremony. The weight of the brass pushes the collar bone down and compresses the rib cage helping to make their necks longer - which they believe adds to their feminine beauty and helps them to resemble a beautiful dragon. The Karen Long Neck women fled Burma during war and political unrest before settling in the hills of Chiang Rai province, northern Thailand, in the mid 20th century. The karen tribe are only allowed to marry blood relatives and their preference is for their first cousins, according to a study by Dr. Lwin Lwin Mon from the Department of Anthropology at Yadanabon University in Burma. The Karen people believe that the neck rings give the women an appearance similar to a dragon, a revered creature in their folklore dating back to the Bronze age. They believe that their tribe is the result of a union between a stunning female dragon and a male human.
