These children from a remote village in India's Odisha state have to cross dangerous floodwaters on foot just to get to school.

They and their parents live in a village called Haladiha and the only way to get to work in the fields and to class is by making the treacherous crossing of the swollen river.

Outside of monsoon season, the crossing is bad enough but after heavy rains and with nothing but a rope for safety, they truly risk their lives just to get to work.

Footage filmed on Saturday (October 26) showed young boys using the rope to haul themselves through the chest-high waters.

According to reports, journalists have raised the situation with local officials who have promised to try to help the villagers.

The Maladaa and the baingaa rivers are great obstructions for these inhabitants to reach the health centres, panchayat office, schools, colleges, even to the local markets. People use ropes to cross the rivers. Even children risk their lives to cross rivers to go to schools. Patients and senior citizens too have to go through the same ordeals. On being interrogated, the BDO Ugresan Oram owned up his recent joining his office, and as he had come to know about the problems of the villagers, he certainly would try to relieve them of their problems.
