Kites from small to enormous, are exhibited and flown in festivals across Guatemala, in celebrations of Day of the Dead, and Day of All Saints, between November 1st. and 2nd. The kites, or Barriletes in spanish, is an ancient tradition, where villagers from all over the country build the kites, and then fly them over the sky, to honor their ancestors. The kites range to all sizes, from small portable ones, to giant ones that measure up to 40 feet in diameter. Some are successfully built and flown, while others crumble to the wind, while waiting to be lifted or are flown. The success of the kite fly also is a measure of how good crop production would be for the communities working and flying the kites. An ancient Tradition of "Día de los Muertos" in this Central American nation.
