Otherworldly drone footage of Azerbaijan's oozing mud volcanoes

Drone footage, filmed on October 8, shows a bizarre geological oddity of small volcanoes made from mud in Qobustan, Azerbaijan.

There are over 400 mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan's unique but oddly beautiful landscape, where the earth breathes and bubbles.

The filmer told Newsflare: "These volcanoes don't spit fire or lava, but instead leak out an oozing muck, pushed to the surface via methane gas."

A CNN article named the region: "The mud volcano capital of the world" and directly compared the horizon to "mars."

They explained: "Mud volcanoes never grow to the size of regular volcanoes. Most are small, ever-changing landforms... formed by the spewed-out clumps of clay."

However, these glistening grey bubbles aren't always safe to touch and their erratic behaviour has long fascinated Azerbaijani people.

Jeyhun Pashayev, director of the reserve said: "As you see, there are lot of mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan which means there are a lot of oil resources.

Pashayev continues: "Because it comes from deep... [some volcanoes] come with radioactive material."
