Thousands of Hindus in India's capital city on Saturday waded into a sacred river to observe the Chhath Puja festival despite the water being covered with toxic foam.

The Yamuna, a tributary of the Ganges, is one of India's most sacred rivers but has become one of its most polluted.

Industrial effluents and untreated sewage continue to flow into the Yamuna, despite repeated government attempts to clean the sacred river.

For many Hindus, the Yamuna remains a key water source which resonates deeply with their faith so on Saturday they waded into the waters nonetheless to observe the ancient festival which is dedicated to the sun god.

The festivities was around the Yamuna that were the most poullted river in India capital city Delhi.

One of India’s most sacred rivers, it has turned into one of its most polluted as institutional neglect has allowed industrial effluents and untreated sewage to flow into it over the years. For last many years Govt trued to clean up the river, none have delivered as yet.

But for million devotees the Yamuna remains a key water source and deeply resonates with their faith. So, today Chhath Puja, thousands entered its waters covered in toxic foam.
