Hundreds of devotees celebrate the Hindu festival of Chhath Puja by standing in neck-deep water in the Indian capital on Saturday (November 2nd.)

The festival sees believers fast for three days before offering prayers to the setting and rising sun.

Hundreds of devotees were seen standing in neck deep water in order to offer prayers to the setting sun on the eve of 02nd November to celebrate Chhath Pooja in the Indian capital New Delhi.

The Chhath pooja is widely celebrated in the region of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh of Northern India.
The residents of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh who stays in the Indian capital took to make a small pond where the devotees gathered in hundreds to offer the prayers to the Sun god.
The devotees then came during the wee hours today (04th November) and waited for the sun to rise in order to worship it.
One of the devotees said, “This is the only festival where we worship the setting sun, while people in other festivals worships only the rising sun, and that makes this festival different and unique.”
The worshippers carry baskets of Fruits and locally made dishes on their head to come on the bank of a river or locally created pond and then offers prayers and fruits to the Sun God.
The next day, the same basket is brought again during the wee hours and offered to complete the ritual.
The fruits are then distributed among the devotees and neighbours as ‘Prasadam’.
The people who observe the fast and do the religious offerings say that the purpose of worshipping is not only to bring prosperity and blessings but also to remind them of their roots and culture wherever they are in the world.
The Chhath Pooja is observed usually 7 days after Diwali (The festival of light) in India and worldwide.
