A large waterspout appeared in the city of Genoa on the coast of Italy on Thursday (November 7) morning.

The natural weather phenomenon appeared at around 10am local time behind a marina where several boats and yachts were moored. The region is also called Genova.

Locals were amazed by the waterspout and filmed it before it dispersed after a few minutes.

Waterspouts, or funnel clouds, are intense columns of swirling tornado clouds that form over a body of water.

They are most commonly found in subtropical areas and disappear shortly after they come into contact with land.

Italy's humid Mediterranean climate combined with fierce thunderstorms can often give rise to waterspouts in coastal areas.
