Workers clean away rubbish from the morning (12/11) after the Buddhist Loi Krathong festival in Thailand.

Locals floated tens of thousands of lucky floral baskets onto the water at the Lumpini Park in Bangkok last night (11/11) to honour the religion's water goddess.

But following the serene scenes, this morning cleaners were taskes with fishing the discarded decorations from the lake and carrying them away in trucks.

Officials said that more than half-a-million Loi Krathong baskets were released into lakes and rivers around the capital.

Ninety-six per cent were made from biodegradable materials, like the one seen in the video, in order to avoid polluting the city's waterways.

Bangkok Governor, Police Major General Asawin Kwanmuang, said that most of the waste left from the festival had been cleaned away before the next morning today (12/11).

He added: “We saw fewer krathongs in total this year, but the fact that the percentage of krathongs made from natural materials has gone up tells us that significantly more people use natural materials to make krathongs.

“Natural material krathongs are good for environment. They will later be sent to Nong Khaem garbage factory to make organic fertilizer, while foam krathongs will be buried.”

Many tourists joined in with the beautiful and serene spectacle. LoiKrathong is said to have started in the 12th century in the ancient Thai kingdom.

Meaning ''to float a basket," it follows the Buddhists belief of paying respect to water spirits. Since the last century, it has been celebrated annually throughout the Kingdom of Thailand and neighbouring countries.

The festival takes place full moon in the evening with a full moon in the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar.

The exact date of Loi Krathong, also spelled Loy Krathong, changes every year.
