Ophthalmologists in western India surgically removed a 7 cm long live parasite from a 70-year-old farmer's eye, after it entered his body due to a dog bite from a decade ago.

The surgery took place on November 12 at Narayan Hospital and Research Centre in Bharuch city, Gujarat.

The gruesome footage shows an incision being made on the patient's eye and the wriggling worm extracted with a pair of surgical tweezers.

According to reports, the patient, Jashu Patel, had been suffering from itching and severe pains in his right eye for the past two months.

When initial treatments did not affect the patient, medics decided to run various test after which they were surprised to find a parasite wobbling around in the eyeball.

The senior ophthalmologist, Dr Milan Panchal, listed the risks in the surgery due to the age of the patient but decided to move forward due to serious problems involved.

Fortunately, the surgery was a success, lasting for about 30 minutes and saving the man from the damage the parasite could have caused.

Reports also say that the parasite had entered Patel's bloodstream 12 years ago through an infected dog's bite.

Parasites in the eyeball can cause effects such as blurry vision, pain, sensitivity to light, and in some cases, even blindness.
