Three people were killed and five others remain trapped after a building collapsed in southern Thailand on Thursday (November 21).

The labourers, all from Burma, were working on a new petrol station when the concrete roof suddenly gave way and fell on them at around 1.30pm local time on the island of Phuket.

Three people were retrieved from the rubble while five remain trapped inside. Fire crews and paramedics were this afternoon battling to reach those who were injured.

The footage shows the rescue team moving and smashing the 15 centimeters cement roof to try to reach the victims.

One rescue worker at the scene said: "The building collapsed around 1.30pm and we have already spent an hour trying to reach the other workers who were trapped under the big concrete roof."

Phuket is an island in the Andaman Sea that is popular with tourists.
