Footage shows the moment a rescue worker waded through a river to save a puppy trapped in the fast-flowing water.

The man named Janis, from the Malaysia Independent Animal Rescue (MIAR), spotted the struggling pooch in Kajang on November 8.

Janis waded through the murky water to carry the Shih Tzu to safety.

MIAR said that it is still unknown how the dog came to be in the river. In a statement, they said that it could have been thrown in.

They said: ''The Shih Tzu is very old and has a cataract problem. Blood tests were done and was admitted at the veterinary clinic because it was having a high fever when they took it.

''MIAR is unable to verify how the dog was in the river. He was either thrown in or fell in, but it is a very deep river.''

The dog was taken to the shelter to be nursed back to health.
