Hong Kong people rally in support for the bill which sanctions Chinese and HK officials responsible for human rights abuses on Oct. 14, 2019. In light of escalating violence of Hong Kong police against protesters, Congress passed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act on Nov. 19, and President Trump finally signed the bill into law on Nov. 27, 2019. China responded furiously, saying the bill “seriously interfered with Hong Kong affairs, seriously interfered with China’s internal affairs, and seriously violated international law and basic norms of international relations.”
